The following information is gathered from our experience from years of piercing. Please remember that we here at Rotten Ink are not doctors nor do we have any type of medical degree. If a serious infection occurs, you should consult your physician. All piercings performed at Rotten Ink are done under strict hygienic conditions. However, a successful piercing begins with you!
1) Cleaning: The easiest and most comfortable way to clean your piercing is during a hot shower or right after. The steam and hot water will help to soften the crust that will form around the base of the jewelry. Gently remove the crust with a Q-tip or a cotton ball.
2) Aftercare: Do not buy any over the counter cleaning agent at the local drug store. These cleaning agents are not meant for piercing and may do more harm that good. We offer an aftercare spray that is recommended for the piercing. Do not play with, or touch your piercing between cleanings. Doing this will only increase your chance of an infection and lengthen your healing time, so do not touch your piercing!
3) Sea Salt Soaks: During the healing process, sea salt will work wonders for your new piercing. Sea salt is the most pure of all salts. It can be found at most drug stores or in the baking section at most grocery stores. It will help speed up the healing process and prevent infection (this is the same method as when you gargle salt water for a sore throat).
Instructions for sea salt soaking
Mix a teaspoon of sea salt in an 8 ounce glass of warm water
Mix Well
Soak a Q-tip or cotton ball in the water
Apply to the soaked Q-tip or cotton ball on the piercing for a few minutes
Rinse the area with regular water to remove any extra salt before it crystallizes on the jewelry.
This process may cause a slight burning sensation the first time you do a sea salt cleaning.
DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING ON YOUR PIERCING:
Rubbing Alcohol: This solution is far too strong for a new piercing. It will only cause irritation and dry out your skin. It will only lengthen your healing time, not to mention the burning and stinging is outrageous.
Peroxide: This is great for skinned knees and first aid, but not for your piercing. Peroxide will start to kill the new skin cells trying to form around your piercing. Therefore it will never allow your piercing to completely heal.
Tea Tree Oil: Undiluted tea tree oil is way too harsh on a piercing. It could also minimize the oxygen flow to the piercing.
Bactine: Bactine has recently fallen off the list of aftercare products for piercings. This product is way too strong on and harms healing tissues. Also Bactine is known to grow bacteria in older bottles.
Antibiotic Ointments: These products usually contain amounts of petroleum jelly which will keep out oxygen out of the piercing – and you need oxygen to heal. They will also create warm moist areas which are perfect for bacteria to breed infections.
Antibacterial Soaps: Your body does not need an antibacterial agent to heal a piercing. Any soap would have the same success rate. All the body needs to keep bacterial levels down is a good washing. The body’s natural defense system and healing agents will do the rest of the healing work.
